AVD manager won't start emulator, no error

AVD manager won't start emulator, no error

I am running Eclipse on a 32-bit Windows 8 laptop. In the AVD Manager, I
set up a device, once it has saved it, I click Start. A dialog box opens,
I click OK and a progress bar appears, but once it gets to about 90% the
progress bar dissapears and nothing happens, no errors, but no emulator
either. I've searched extensively and no-one else seems to be having the
same issue;
Re-installed the SDK and eclipse
A processor image is present
API version is correct for project
Tried several different configurations for the emulator
Emmulator.exe is never present in Task Manager
Any advice would be greatfully received!
